CONCERT REPORT: Brian Fallon at The Space

Brian Fallon at the Space in Westbury, Oct 2018
Following the string of dates his band The Gaslight Anthem played over the course of 2018 might seem like a tall order for singer Brian Fallon. But since their hiatus began in 2015, he has been quite successful developing his own following, including some people who weren’t familiar with his band at all. So any worry of alienating Gaslight fans surely quickly disappeared, as he’s been able to stay on the public’s radar through two albums now.

One of his earliest dates on his Fall tour included a stop at The Space in Westbury, Long Island. For this run, Fallon was solo without a backing band. This meant that fans would be treated to some pretty magical moments, as quite often, Fallon will rework his songs into beautiful acoustic and piano renditions that do not usually end up on a record anywhere. So to enjoy these new versions of songs, you either have to scour YouTube or Instagram posts, or be lucky enough to be present in the house when they are performed.

The highlight of the night for me was a version of “Painkillers” on piano. It’s so much more haunting than the version on his 2016 record when performed on a piano with the kind of emotion only Fallon can deliver. If you’ve ever struggled with heartbreak and the life of hit-and-miss dating, you’ll easily be able to relate to the song.
